This year we returned to Lancashire from Thursday 24 July to Sunday 27 July to explore the wealth of the Gothic Revival architecture in the south of the county. Drawing on its recusant past, Lancashire is rich in Catholic connections. We saw work by Augustus and Edward Pugin, as well as explored the flowering of refined later Victorian gothic in the work of Austin & Paley. We visited Stonyhurst College to view the architecture and see items from its archives. We saw examples of civic architecture, as well as a number of notable churches. The climax of the trip was a visit to Scarisbrick Hall, the astonishing product of the work of both Augustus and Edward Pugin. The trip was be led by Dr James Jago of the University of York. We stayed at the attractive Victorian resort of Southport, in the Royal Clifton Hotel and Spa. The tour started on Thursday evening with a visit to the historic Samlesbury Hall for an introductory talk that set the scene for the Gothic Revival in Lancashire and for a buffet supper.
